UVA provides an online Key Management Service (KMS) that performs that activation. KMS activated software needs to periodically make contact with the KMS server to remain active — at least every 180 days (this happens automatically for computers connected to the UVA network). The KMS activation process is only intended for software downloaded through the Microsoft Campus/Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) Agreement for University-owned computers.
